A Cheap Legal PS3 Homebrew Alternative?
Here is yet another update on the PS3 Homebrew front. While Sony awaits its court date with the makers of the PS3 Jailbreak, an independent group of hackers has released the code of the Jailbreak to the public. This code, entitled the PSGroove, is really nothing more than pre-compiled hex-code that you can dump onto a USB Flash Chip, but it does exactly what the Jailbreak does: It lets you run unsigned programs on the PS3’s hardware! All you need is an AT90USB chip and you are set. Hell, just Google “Teensy USB Development Board” and you are well on your way to PS3 homebrewing awesomeness.
So why is this so revolutionary while the PS3Jailbreak spends its day with its thumb up its ass in Australian courts? Well, one part of the PS3 Jailbreak’s code was mysteriously omitted when the PSGroove was created. Care to take a guess on which part of the code it is? That’s right, it’s the part of the code that lets you play backup games. Basically, the PSGroove won’t let you dump your games onto your PS3’s harddrive, nor will it let you run games off of a USB hard drive or burned disks. The PSGroove will let you do everything else you want with your system though. Cheat programs? Sure! Emulators? You bet! Virtual desktops? Why not? Piracy? Nope!!!
Of course, now that this code has been released into the wild, it’s only a matter of time until some hacker figures out how to add backup support, but until then we have a device that Sony really doesn’t have to worry about. Believe it or not, there are homebrewers out there that don’t want to pirate games. Hell, I want to get one of these just for its cheat device usage. Several RPGs I have played would be a lot better with slight boosts to cash or XP gain, and I still can’t beat score attack mode on BlazBlue: Continuum Shift. Oh, that reminds me, hopefully homebrewers won’t be able to use the PSGroove to cheat online.

not as cheep as the free way http://ps3custom.host.sk/
Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It is a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
