Halloween Exclusive: Veteran Ghostbuster Ernie Hudson Talks Sequel
Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Ramis have been all over the news recently, talking about possible plans for Ghostbusters 3. Still, aren’t people forgetting someone? Yes, our old pal Ernie Hudson, who played Winston Zeddmore in the original movie, has been relatively silent on the subject! It’s understandable, considering that everything is just talk and speculation at this point, but still, now that both Murray and Aykroyd have read the script and like it, Hudson is the last piece of the puzzle.
We were lucky enough to catch up with Hudson at the Big Apple Comic Con. Not only was he as informative as he could be, but he was also genuinely a nice guy. Read on to hear more about the Ghostbusters 3 movie, and about Hudson’s life as a Ghostbuster. With Hudson on board, Ghostbusters 3 may be closer than we think.
(A note for the skeptics: Yes, we know that other important actors, like Rick Moranis and Sigourney Weaver, have said no (or very possibly no, in Sigourney’s case), but the movie is going on without them anyway. Also, if her work on the videogame is any indication, Annie Potts is probably coming back. Suck it, skeptics!)
Show Me the Money!
ERNIE HUDSON: Hi guys, how’re ya doing?
30 NINJAS: It’s a pleasure and an honor to meet you. So Ghostbusters is becoming popular all of a sudden again: We got the video games and talk of Ghostbusters 3. On the video games, what was it like to get back with the old cast and doing some Ghostbusters stuff again?
EH: Well, the fans have sort of kept it alive all these years, so it’s been great to keep the franchise going and great to have the guys back, and hopefully we’ve taken a step closer to making a movie happen. So it’s been really cool.
30 NINJAS: So what was it like working on a video game?
EH: It was great. It’s just voice work, but it’s always great to be a part of it.
30 NINJAS: So about Ghostbusters 3, are you guys any closer? Are you excited about the possibility of another movie?
EH: I’ve been hearing that it’s going to happen, but I haven’t heard from the studio yet. Until the studio calls with some money, it’s all just talk. I’d love for it to happen. I think it’d be great to get the guys together again, and I think the fans want it, so I think there are all the reasons to do it, but we’ll see if the guys with the money step up.
30 NINJAS: And if that happens you’ll definitely be in it, right?
EH: Hey, if that happens and there’s a steady paycheck in it, I’ll believe anything you say.
30 NINJAS: Awesome, awesome. So going way back into the past, what originally got you into Ghostbusters? What got you the role?
EH: I did a movie called Spacehunter with Molly Ringwald — Ivan Reitman produced it — a year before Ghostbusters, and you know, the part comes up, you do the dance, audition and do your damnedest to get the job. And in this case, I got the job.
30 NINJAS: Other than the video games and Ghostbusters 3, do you think there will be any other Ghostbusters stuff on the horizon? A revival of the old franchise?
EH: For me, you do it, you do the best you can with it, you have fun with it, and you move on, and if something comes out of it, great. And if not, that’s OK, too.
30 NINJAS: What’s the coolest thing about being a Ghostbuster?
EH: The coolest thing about being a Ghostbuster is that I see a lot of people who are down on their luck and having a rough time, and then I go walking by and they go, “Whoa!” And they’ll tell me their Ghostbusters stories, and at the end of it they’ll seem to feel better, and that’s kinda cool.
30 NINJAS: One last thing: Do you believe in ghosts?
EH: Absolutely. I believe there’s a lot going on out there that we can’t perceive with our eyes and ears, but they’re out there. Absolutely, I believe in ghosts.
