A Week For Sequels — Clash of the Titans and Wolverine Mobilize

Clash of the Titans was enjoyable for the soda-swilling, pop-corn-gobbling summer blockbuster that it was. No, you probably didn’t walk out of the film feeling intellectually enriched with a newfound respect for Greek myth, but chances are you weren’t bored during one minute of the kraken-fest.

Of course, for those of you who were foolish to shell out the extra cash and watch the film in its cheesy retro-fitted 3D train-wreck version this news may come as a shock, so you’ll have to bear with me.

Production will begin this February on Clash of the Titans 2. Yes, the sequel that was probably on no one’s radar is moving full steam ahead. Why, you may ask, is this sequel being made? Well, despite lackluster reviews and box-office averageness in the United States, the film managed to pull in 500 million internationally. And any film that makes half a billion dollars is going to get a sequel.

The film has Jonathan Liebesman (Darkness Falls, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning) attached as director, and will probably star Sam Worthington and Gemma Aterton considering that the protagonist and his love interest survived the first film. So get ready to see bunch of testosterone-fueled, roided-out ancients kicking ass, all the while wearing skirts, as early as next year. Let’s just hope they either film this one in 3D or leave the gimmicks out of it and go with the standard 2D experience.

In related summer blockbuster sequel news Wolverine 2 is chugging along quite nicely. As part of the critically mediocre but internationally successful club, I’m sure that this one would get fast-tracked if they could settle on a director. Right now the race is between David Slade (Eclipse, 30 Days of Night) and . . . strangely Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler, Requiem for a Dream). Honestly, I can’t really see Aronofsky directing a bloated budget blockbuster like this and it’s possible that his name is only here because of his relationship with Hugh Jackman (forged during the filming of The Fountain).

We’ll bring you more news on these two projects as it becomes available.
