Andrew Garfield is Spider-Man
The speculation is finally over! Sony Pictures has confirmed that Andrew Garfield will be playing Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the upcoming reboot of the film franchise.
The shortlist for the role reportedly included Aaron Johnson, Anton Yelchin, Logan Lerman, Jamie Bell, Alden Ehrenreich, Frank Dillane, and Josh Hutcherson as well as Garfield. That is to say nothing of the months and months of speculation that saw literally every young brown-haired actor in Hollywood on someone’s Peter Parker rumor mill. Even comedian Donald Glover’s extensive Twitter campaign got him noticed for the role, although was not given an audition (much to my chagrin). Rumors from earlier this week claimed that Hutcherson had been offered the role and accepted, but Sony’s new report clearly proves this false (that also potentially means that the Lizard isn’t guaranteed to be the villain).
Andrew Garfield is not as well-known as some of the other actors on the list which seems to fit with the direction Marc Webb is going to take the franchise. He is most recognizable for his role in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and in the upcoming David Fincher film, The Social Network. At 26 years old, he is among the oldest of the potential Spider-Man stars and considering the film will be set in Peter Parker’s high school days, this could pose a problem, but Hollywood usually has no trouble making older actors look younger.
The Spider-Man reboot came about after Spider-Man 4 experienced numerous delays and eventually lost its director, Sam Raimi. The decision was made to restart the franchise with a completely new cast, a younger Peter Parker, and Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer) directing. The new film will also be in 3-D and will based on the Ultimate Spider-Man comic series, which has upset some fans (although personally, I liked the teeny direction of the comics).
Fans will have plenty of time to debate Andrew Garfield’s strengths, weaknesses, age, and acting prowess in the months before the film’s 2012 release date.
