Are We Really Not Done With Spore Yet?
It’s just after E3 and we are already looking at new events to showcase the latest new games. Looks like the gaming industry never sleeps does it. The next biggest venue seems to be the San Diego Comic Con, an already sold out geek fest that may just be the next big thing since E3. We already know that Yoshinori Ono is getting space at Comic Con in order to unveil his next greatest creation. So what other video game pioneers will be joining him. Well, it looks like Will Wright and Maxis are going to jump on the bandwagon and unveil their next big project at Comic Con too. What is that creation? More Spore!
…
Ugh really? Many of you may remember when Maxis promised the world when Spore first came out, and what we got was a couple hours of mini games before leading up to an unfortunately bland space sim. However, Maxis is not going to let their huge aspirations die. Comic Con’s schedule says:
6:00-7:00 Video Game Reveal: Maxis Studio— Maxis Studio (The Sims and Spore video games) has just announced their next project, a brand new, Sci-Fi Action-RPG based on the DNA of Spore.
Back in May, Kotaku said that Maxis would be going to Comic Con to unveil a new game called Darkspore. The idea behind Darkspore is that it will put the Spore creatures you develop at every stage up against an evil alien race that wants to take over the galaxy. So it’s something like the Grox from the original Spore. The idea would be to integrate the game into the existing Spore framework. That way, people can use their own saved games and creatures and use them to populate the world of the sci-fi action RPG.
Now the idea of procedurally made RPG content is pretty interesting. If Maxis gets their algorithms correct, we could literally have an RPG that is totally customizable, a true sandbox game where the user could do literally anything. However, if Maxis phones it in, we are just going to get an Oblivion clone starring creatures with six eyes and four mouths … well, more creatures with six eyes and four mouths than we were used to in the original Oblivion.
Will Darkspore be anything like what we wanted Spore to be? Probably not, but it may be worth it to check out the Maxis panel at Comic Con and find out.
