Avatar Back in Theaters and Into the Sea
Let’s get one thing straight, Avatar made money. It made a lot of money. It made more money than any other film has ever made. But apparently it didn’t make enough money. “Enough” is of course a relative term, but Avatar faced a unique set of challenges with its nationwide IMAX 3-D release. Avatar was still selling out the IMAX theaters when it was contractually obligated to vacate the IMAX arena so that it could be replaced by Alice in Wonderland. So how do they plan on capitalizing on the market of people who never got to see Avatar in IMAX 3-D? Re-releasing the film of course! You should expect Avatar to make a triumphant big screen return this August complete with a whopping six additional minutes of extra content. James Cameron apparently has memories of being able to see 2001: A Space Odyssey in Toronto theaters three years after its initial release and wants some of that action. For a film like Avatar I think this makes perfect sense. There is no way that watching the Avatar DVD on a laptop could possibly compare to seeing it on a huge IMAX screen in 3-D. It’s not even close! So, you can definitely count me in to be immersed in the Na’vi world of Pandorum this summer.
Cameron also spoke a little bit about cultivating and expanding the already rich world of Pandorum in the sequel that is being planned:
We created a broad canvas for the environment of film. That’s not just on Pandora, but throughout the Alpha Centauri AB system. And we expand out across that system and incorporate more into the story – not necessarily in the second film, but more toward a third film. I’ve already announced this, so I might as well say it: Part of my focus in the second film is in creating a different environment – a different setting within Pandora. And I’m going to be focusing on the ocean on Pandora, which will be equally rich and diverse and crazy and imaginative, but it just won’t be a rain forest. I’m not saying we won’t see what we’ve already seen; we’ll see more of that as well.
I wish that I could say that I was surprised about Cameron taking the second film to the seas of Pandorum but I am absolutely not. Cameron only really made Titanic as an excuse to go and get some original footage of the wreckage himself, so if Avatar II occurs solely underwater I wouldn’t be shocked in the slightest. Let’s just hope that we see the film before 2020. Also . . . a third film!? Not to get ahead of ourselves but if Cameron’s track record is any indication I will be an old man by the time the third movie is released. Still, I’m pumped that we are going to get a trilogy.
