Blade Kitten — I Don’t Know What This Is, But I’m Aroused
Maybe it’s just the rabid anime fan in me, but this game looks absolutely awesome. I mean, its an anime-esque catgirl in space wielding some sort of psychic sword. What’s not to like?
Blade Kitten is a 2D action platformer done by Krome, the guys who brought you … actually … what the hell did they do again? Hold on let me Wiki this. Oh, they did Spyro the Dragon, and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. Oh I get it! That’s exactly what Blade Kitten is. Its a fusion of their well known cutesy mascot style with the sci-fi sword play of Star Wars. Now it all makes sense.
The idea is simple. You are a cat girl in space that beats up people for money. Unfortunately, a rival of yours blows up your ship and steals your bounty. It’s up to you to get it back, in the most tongue in cheek way possible. Blade Kitten is all about tongue in cheek humor. The cartoony protagonists are obviously supposed to be fetishized sex objects, which is awesome. The enemies spout off military codes that really amount to nothing more than OMG and WTF. The whole thing exists basically to make you laugh at its corniness, while you go through some classic platforming levels. The story, what little of it there is, is told through cut-scenes that play out whenever you get to specific points in a level, although these too are little more than corny catchphrases spouted one after another.
Outside of its pretty pink paint coat, Blade Kitten actually appears to be quite fun. What we have seen thus far via several previews posted all over the internet, is a game that is quite innovative. It is 2.5-D, far closer to the 2 side than the 3 side. You wander through levels on one plane but certain events can catapult you into the foreground or background to traverse other parts of the level. Small areas can only be traversed with your pet alien Skiffy, while wide open areas are best traversed with your strange alien dino horse Noot. Both of these minor characters can also go into the foreground and background independent of our intrepid catgirl protagonist, which creates puzzles with very interesting solutions.
