Dormammu and Viewtiful Joe Join Marvel VS Capcom 3
Gamescom day one has ended and it has brought us plenty of new updates, and call me a bit of a fanatic but there is no update that I was more excited about than the expansion to the roster of Marvel VS Capcom 3. Unfortunately, the Gamescom updates to the roster are two characters that we pretty much already knew would be present. I am talking about Viewtiful Joe and The Dread Dormammu. Joe was shown very clearly in a silhouette in the last trailer that was released, and Dormammu made a special guest appearance at the end of the E3 trailer. Still, we did get a lot of high res screen-caps that showed them in battle (courtesy of Kotaku), so I guess it wasn’t a total loss.
Judging by these pictures, Joe appears to play the same way he played in Tatsunoko VS Capcom. He still has his slow-firing cannon super, his voomerang and bomb special moves, and his air flurries and red-hot kicks. He is also a good deal smaller than most of the rest of the cast, so he will be hard to hit with many of his attacks. Judging by the height of his attacks in some of these pictures, and considering that he had this ability in his game of origin, Joe appears to be one of the characters that can double jump and air dash, making him extremely useful in air combo heavy teams.
Dormammu is a little harder to analyze being that we haven’t really seen an example or even an analog of his gameplay in action, however, there are a few facts that we can squeeze out from these screencaps. One of his super moves appears to be a vertical column of fire that hits similarly to Captain Commando’s famous Captain Corridor. This will most likely make Dormammu a valuable assist character. He also seems to have the ability to make a black hole which does multi-hit damage as well. So far we have only seen one super, and it appears to be a gigantic flame wave that expands outward, much like a beam super. Adding all these moves up, it appears as if Dormammu will be an area denial type of character, with powerful anti-airs and good zoning techniques. Coupled with his large size (and speculated below average speed) Dormammu will most likely play a great game of keep away, and will also be a powerhouse on the bench.
Of course this is all speculation right now. We won’t be able to get a true feel for how he plays until we see a gameplay video, or even better, take him for a spin in a demo version. Until then, we can only theorize and guess.
We will bring you more Marvel VS Capcom 3 news when it becomes available.
