Doug Liman Blog: On My Way To Cannes

I’m packing to go to France for the Cannes Film Festival. I normally travel with a mountaineering backpack. I loathe the rolling suitcase. In fact, it’s such pet peeve of mine that there’s a little tribute to one in Mr. & Mrs. Smith in which I give Brad Pitt a rolling suitcase but it’s filled with guns and explosives. That being said, I’m staring at my mountaineering backpack which still has Haitian dust on it, and thinking that, based on the attitude of the people at Armani, the fancy tux that they gave me to wear on the red carpet might not look so good once it comes out of it. They would be truly horrified.

Packing the backpack for the film festival is also invoking all sorts of memories of traveling to the Deauville Film Festival with my mother for the Bourne Identity. Deauville is also of course in France and she had a rolling suitcase and I had my backpack. She was so aghast by my choice of luggage that a rolling suitcase appeared the next week at my office, which I promptly gave to the night cleaning person. She then was so horrified and upset that I gave away her gift that I felt badly and bought the suitcase back from the cleaning person. So clearly for me, something as minor as a suitcase is not without stress and right now I’m sitting with a pile of clothing and nothing to pack it in except my Haitian backpack. I may have to run out and buy something.
