Doug Liman Blog: Scouting Niagra the Night Before Covert Affairs Premiere
In Niagra Falls working on an amazing episode of Covert Affairs. Big action sequence at the falls — what an incredible location. Cannot believe what we are being allowed to do here.
You know that feeling you get when you are standing next to a cliff edge, or looking out over a tall balcony? Well, that’s been me for most of the scout.
The creative environment is awesome. Not one, not two, but three of us directors working out the action. Vince Misiano, the episode director, our supervising director Jonathan Glassnerk, and me.
Everyone is in a great mood, amped up by tomorrow’s 10p premiere and by the reviews that have come in.

I hope your show is realistic, informative, inspirational, something that operatives can relate or agree with. I unfortunately have had a terrible experience with such——that I have been told many times “we had everything set up for you, and you blew it”. Bourne experiences, valkyries, Die Hard. and the list goes on and on. One suggestion keep in mind, it does not take much to piss off an operative. And have same alter your brain because he/she feels it is necessary or vital for their own personal reason. Or have your whole life turned up side down. Including your family, so called friends, career. OH yes! Just a reminder the best operatives I`ve seen in action —-DEUTSHE— sturm ab tei lung! Good luck Mr. Liman You shall be watched!
Nah Dr. Jackman, I disagree. It doesn’t matter if it’s real, it just has to be good, and sometimes those two things conflict. A writer is often faced with a choice where he can have the character do a thing that’s “real” or the thing that’s “cool” or “fun” or “good.” Because it’s a movie, he should always go with the latter choices. If you want reality, just live. Don’t spend money and expect a director to duplicate reality and then spit it back at you.
Doug, saw the first two episodes tonight on dvr. I thought it was great, initially put off with the whole CIA doesn’t work domestic like that but the story kept me into it. For a good story well played I can suspend and go for the ride. Look forward to seeing more and thanks for bringing some watchable television back. Look forward to Fair Game- Sean Penn what a great talent!
As a executive how much creative role do you take in a project or is it all money related?

With a good story line, plot and played well, you get a good show.
