Expect Explosions! Piper Perabo Spy Drama Covert Affairs Gets USA Greenlight
News in the Ninja Universe: It became official last night that USA Network greenlit 11 episodes of Covert Affairs, starring the extraordinarily wide-smiling Piper Perabo. (You may remember her bare midriff from Coyote Ugly.) The show is created and co-executive produced by Matt Corman and Chris Ord, and is produced by Hypnotic (the TV and film company owned by our partners in 30 Ninjas, Dave Bartis and Doug Liman). Covert Affairs centers on Annie, a CIA trainee who’s promoted to field operative faster than she expected. The cast, in addition to Piper, includes Peter Gallagher, Christopher Gorham, Kari Matchett and Anne Dudek. There will be the expected love interest in the form of a former, mysterious boyfriend (Eion Bailey), but the main draw of this series for Ninjas is that it promises lots of action. Doug and Dave both intend the production values for this series to be a notch above the standard TV action. I saw the show shooting in Toronto, and from what I’ve seen so far, they are going to deliver.
Doug traveled to Toronto early on in the production of the 90-minute pilot to consult with Tim Matheson (the pilot director), going over the biggest action scenes. You can be sure that Doug’ll be blogging about this and other Covert Affairs news.
For my part, I was lucky enough to visit the set last fall, when I met Tim, Piper, and the crew, and watched as they totally blew the shit out of a set, à la Mr. & Mrs Smith. The special effects on set were awesome to watch, and I got a full blow-by-blow of how they did it so you’ll be hearing from me as well.
Congrats to Hypnotic and the cast and crew of Covert Affairs!
