Final Fantasy XIII Director Wants To Remake Final Fantasy VII?

It seems like rumors about a possible Final Fantasy VII remake have been flying around now that a new Final Fantasy chapter has been released. It doesn’t make our lives any easier that so many of the rumors are conflicting . Tetsuya Nomura, character designer for both Final Fantasy VII and XIII, as well as many others believed that a Final Fantasy VII remake probably wouldn’t happen. Square-Enix simply has too much on its plate, and while he gave us a hint about possible Final Fantasy VII character cameos in upcoming games, he squashed our hopes for a full remake out the gate.

Then Yoshinori Kitase, Final Fantasy VII director, said that he would love to work on a Final Fantasy VII remake. He said that he wanted to see the game get the full update treatment, new graphics, voice acting, the whole nine yards. However, at the same time he told us that games are strongly tied to technological limitations of their time. We saw RPGs come out with the stories and systems they had in the PSone era, because the PSone didn’t have the power to do any more. Converting an old school game into a current gen remake is harder than you would believe, apparently harder than making a game from scratch. In short, he said that some day, a Final Fantasy VII remake may happen, but not today.

Well, we have yet another layer to add to the story. FFXIII director Motomu Toriyama was recently asked what game he would like to remake if he got the chance. His answer? Final Fantasy VII of course:

“If we had the manpower and the time to work on a project, if we were to remake Final Fantasy VII with the quality of Final Fantasy XIII it would become a tremendous project …If we can get the number of people we need by all means that would be the one I would really want to remake.”

So wait. What do we have here? We know that the project will be very difficult. We know that Square-Enix has a lot of other projects on their hands. We know that Kitase, Nomura, and Toriyama all want to do the project but they need a lot more time, manpower, and money to actually get it off the ground. So, is the only thing that is keeping us from a Final Fantasy VII remake the difficulty of doing it?

What happens to the future of Final Fantasy all depends on these next few iterations. In fact, the success of Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy XIV is so crucial, there have been talks about cutting the series and possibly not producing a Final Fantasy XV. However, if XV is passed over for say a VII remake, then perhaps Square will get the boos they need to continue the series into the next generation.
