Final Fight Double Impact — Double the Pleasure, Double the Punch

Aaaaaaah, old school beat-em-ups. I loved this shit back in the day, and Final Fight was king. Sure it was nothing more than a button mash fest, but it was a damn fun button mash fest. Guy, Cody, and Hagar’s mustache were some of the most bad-ass characters in video game history. Your only purpose in this game was to beat the shit out of everyone in your way. Everyone! It didn’t matter if they were large wrestlers, or transvestites, or punks, or clowns, or any of that shit. If they were in your way, you punched them, kicked them, hit them with pipes, and eventually saved Cody’s girlfriend. Then Cody became a bastard, dumped his girlfriend Jessica, and entered the prison system, pretty much for fun. This is how he, and Guy eventually made it into the cast of Street Fighter. In commemoration of their addition to the roster, Capcom is letting you go back to the ol’ white t-shirt/tight jeans days of Cody tearing up the streets of Metro City by releasing Final Fight Double Impact. Oh, and you get to play Magic Sword again too!!!

Now, it’s not like there is a whole lot of new stuff here but for the price it’s unbeatable. Face-lifted graphics and music as well as a variety of customization options are about as much as you will get in terms of added content inside the actual game itself. You can play the game online, which makes it easy to find someone to play with, but the core game itself really hasn’t changed. However, Final Fight fanatics will be happy to know that there is a slew of other goodies to unlock, including pages from old Final Fight comics, and a god-awful episode of the old Street Fighter cartoon that features Final Fight characters. Aside from that, it’s basically the arcade experience all over again, but with infinite quarters, so the challenge is dialed waaaay down. However, in the end it’s all about being a fun distraction, and Final Fight is more than a fun distraction, even if you weren’t playing an updated and snazzy version.

Magic Sword offers up the same graphics and sound options that Final Fight does in this two game pack. Once again, it’s an old 2-D arcade game resurrected for our enjoyment, except this one focuses on building a party and firing a variety of projectiles at an amazing amount of enemies on-screen all at once. It’s kind of like a bullet hell shooter, except you are walking, swinging swords, killing demons, and joining up with flying lizardmen. Yeah, it’s pretty awesome. Once again, infinite continues, but it’s more than enough to keep you occupied.

This double package primarily appeals to the achievement hunters out there. Since you have infinite continues, the only real challenge of the game comes in trying to get each achievement, trophy, and unlockable including comics, videos, fan-art (oh god the fan-art) and much, much more. However, if you aren’t an achievement hunter, this game is still quite the value. It’s ten dollars for two classic games, and hell, a lot of people haven’t even played Magic Sword. If you have 10 dollars to burn, pick up Final Fight Double Impact. It will be a great way to hold your interest until Guy and Cody come to the console again in Super Street Fighter IV.
