Game Over — Non-Complaints About Marvel VS Capcom 3
Now that most of the info for Marvel VS Capcom 3 is out in the open, I’d like to take the time to address the numerous fans that are so angry about this game that they are “canceling their pre-order.” First of all, I sincerely doubt that anyone who says they are canceling their pre-order actually is, and if they are, it’s their loss anyway. However, just to clear the air about our point of view, I’ll address some of the most common complains certain angry fans have about this game.
Capcom Lied to Us
Come on guys, really? When we say “Capcom lied to us” we aren’t actually saying they lied to us. We are kind of poking fun at all of the fans out there that swear every rumor that hits the internet is handed down from the divine almighty Shuma-Gorath himself. Yes, Niitsuma did say something to the effect of “no more Darkstalkers” and yes, he did say that there were issues with getting Sentinel into the roster, but none of these could really be considered lies. Heck, maybe plans changed, or maybe we simply misunderstood what Niitsuma was saying. However, let’s say for a second that they did blatantly lie to our faces. Honestly, who cares? Isn’t it a game developer’s job to build hype about their game? They are fully within their rights to screw with our heads a little to get us to go nuts when Sentinel or any character was revealed. Nowhere is it written that game companies have to be totally honest with their fans 100% of the time. That’s just something that you are assuming.
The Roster Sucks and Is Full of Wasted Characters
The roster sucks? Fans have just been clamoring to see Thor, Dante, Deadpool, and Zero in a VS series title for years now. Heck, the infamous MVC3 April Fools fake screenshot had Zero and Thor photoshopped to look authentic. Top tier favorites like Sentinel and Storm are back in for the pros, and series favorites like Ryu and Wolverine return for nostalgia purposes. Yeah, it might suck that Strider, Jin, Captain Commando, Megaman, Cyclops, Gambit, Iceman, and Cable aren’t in, but heck, there is only so much space on a character select screen! Besides, there is always a chance these characters will come back in DLC form. In fact, the only time we hear any complaints to this effect, it’s because someone’s favorite character from a previous installment didn’t make the cut. The characters aren’t going to play the same anyway. Try someone new!
There Is No Story Mode
Alright, we will admit that the Arcade mode that was previewed on the stream a few days ago was kind of lame. It only had eight stages and a final fight with Galactus, and yeah, Capcom did make it seem like there was more of a story this time around. So you don’t get a long involved story in a fighting game. Is that really the worst thing in the world? Aren’t we all excited about this game for the VS opportunities anyway? Also, if you are really that upset about the lack of a story mode; why not pre-order the special edition? If you remember it comes with a comic that details the entire story of Marvel VS Capcom 3. You get your story mode right there. So the Arcade mode is a little lame. No game is perfect.
The Endings Blow
Once again, this is a complaint along the lines of “There is No Story Mode.” I’ll just ask an honest question: Are you really purchasing a fighting game for its story mode? I played through Blazblue’s story mode 100%, and it’s merely a fraction of the time I spent in online rooms and other game modes. The endings in this game are just a series of still images with text, but really, I kind of like it that way. The original Street Fighter II endings were still images with text, so it kind of feels nostalgic. In addition, they feel sort of like a Marvel comic. That hits both ends of the demographic don’t you think?
Mission Mode Is Useless/Simple Mode is Cheap
I don’t know any other way to tackle this one other than to say it is blatantly false. Simple mode makes the game more accessible for the public, and Mission Mode helps the casual gamer get better at the game in a shorter span of time. Unless you belong to some sort of secret society of fighting gamers that refuses to let new players in, I don’t see how either of these affects you. Besides, you don’t see Justin Wong complaining about simple mode, and I doubt you are as good at this game as Justin Wong is.
Final Thoughts
We don’t normally respond to whiners, but Capcom is one of our favorite game companies. They have been making quality fighting games for a long time, and the fact that they are working so hard to bring the fighting game community back is inspiring to anyone who remembers the old days of the arcade. Don’t listen to the whiners and don’t let them discourage you from buying the game. If you want our opinion on Marvel VS Capcom 3, it’s that it’s a well-crafted game that is just going to get better as time goes on. If you are a fighting game fan, you will be hard-pressed to find a better game.
