It’s pretty rare to find people carrying swords around nowadays, so the art of bladed weapon fighting has sort of lost its place in the spotlight. But even a simple concealed knife can be extraordinarily powerful if produced at just the right moment, which is why knives have made their way into many of our favorite action movies. Knife fights are generally characterized as fast, fierce, and filled with martial prowess (look no further than V for Vendetta). Real knife fights, however, often devolve into a chaotic grappling for advantage, with both fighters on the ground. As a result, knife fights are often not much to look at, at least when they are done realistically. But with a bit of good atmosphere, the audience can be put in the position of either of the knife-fighting characters, grappling for his very life. Here is one devastatingly successful such scene, from Saving Private Ryan. It’s disturbing stuff. No feel-good Hollywood catharsis once the fighting’s all over. Caution: This video is for mature audiences only.

It’s difficult to actually find real-life video parallels of movie knife fights, if only because we don’t normally have cameras on the front lines in wartime. However, if we dig deep into the treasure trove of random footage that is the Internet, we do start to see some epic real-life analogues. One shocking example is the prison knife fight shown in this video.

The knife fighters are, of course prisoners, and they have little to lose. The result is a fight that is basically to the death. As they duel for a crowd that cheers for every ounce of blood lost, they come closer and closer to killing each other, with the guards barely caring. Even after the fight they are in prison and have nothing to dress their wounds. The best they can do is wrap up their dirty shirts and tie them tightly around their bodies, pushing closed the wounds regardless of the chance of infection. Prison life truly is brutal. However, I have seen worse in backyards right here in America.

These guys are refused entry into a club so they pull a knife on the bouncers and slice at them. One guy considers following the bouncers as they flee into the club. Pretty good thing he didn’t go in, considering the number of men that stream out to chase him down.

It appears as if this knife actually ends the fight without any further violence. This guy was pretty well beat until he pulled the knife and the men around him were smart enough to back away.
