Marvel VS. Capcom 3 For The Win

Well, well, well. It looks like the rumors are true. Marvel VS Capcom 3 is happening after all, and it is sweeter than we once thought. At Captivate this year, Capcom showcased their brand new Marvel VS Capcom 3 trailer, and was nice enough to dish some details about this new upcoming title.

First of all, the game will have graphics in the vein of Tatsunoko VS. Capcom, i.e. stylized polygonal models fighting in a 2-D plane. The game will have a story, which will probably be inconsequential to most of the gameplay but whatever. At least Capcom won’t be falling behind Midway in ability to create wacky nonsense fighting game plots. The title of the game will be Marvel VS. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds. Capcom has skillfully shortened this title to Marvel VS. Capcom 3: FTW. For the win indeed!

Six characters have been revealed so far, five returners and one new face. Wolverine, Iron Man, and The Hulk are returning from the Marvel side. On the Capcom side, we have Ryu, Morrigan, and our lone newcomer Chris Redfield sporting his Resident Evil 5 costume. No details on the battle system have been revealed yet, so we don’t know if any of the returners will be sporting their old MVSC2 move lists, or perhaps their new TVC or SFIV move lists, or even if any of these move lists would even be applicable. We sure do hope that Chris Redfield has some sort of special that involves Wesker though. At the end of the trailer, however, Ryu is revealed firing a Shinku Hadoken beam very similar to the one he fires in Tatsunoko VS Capcom.

Capcom has stated that their goal would be to release the game with around 30 playable characters. That’s nothing to scoff at, however, that is in fact a smaller roster than Marvel VS Capcom 2. So, it is unfortunate to say that there is a big possibility that your favorite characters won’t be returning. Only six characters may have been confirmed but, we think it is safe to say that some of the MVSC poster boys will be returning, such as Strider, Jin, and Spider-Man.

It turns out that the game has been in production longer than most of us have realized. In fact, it turns out that MVSC3 had been planned since MVSC2 came out. The licensing issues were just that goddamn complicated. Marvel, of course, has final say on which characters get used in the final product, and apparently Marvel (with Disney at the helm of course) has had several strong opinions on which characters to use and how they are portrayed. However, it appears as if a final roster has finally been decided on and work is well underway.

If everything goes smoothly, apparently MVSC3 will see a release in Spring of 2011. Personally, we can’t wait. We will give you more info when it becomes available.
