Mary Jane Watson Cast in Spider-Man Reboot

What did you think about Kirsten Dunst playing everyone’s favorite neighborhood redhead in the first three Spider-Man films? Apart from some sexy upside down smooching, I found Dunst’s portrayal to be completely detached from the the character’s comic book personality. Throughout the first three films Dunst’s Mary Jane was mired in self-doubt, a far cry from the “face it tiger . . . you just hit the jackpot” super model attitude found in most of the Spider-Man comics (at least in The Amazing Spider-Man).

Mary Jane has officially been cast in Marc Webb’s upcoming reboot, and the winner is Emma Stone. The redheaded star of Superbad and Easy A will hopefully bring a level of superficiality and braggadocio lacking in the character’s initial three film run. Stone joins Andrew Garfield, previously cast as Peter Parker. No word yet on Gwen Stacy or the baddie Spidey will be pitted against, but we will be sure to bring you news on that front as soon as we can.

Tom Hanks Unveils Electric City

The last we heard from Tom Hanks was as Woody in Toy Story 3 and the last we saw from him was in the much maligned Angels & Demons . It seems Mr. Gump has been focusing on production duties as of late, his latest project being the sci-fi web series Electric City. The last thing Hanks produced was The Pacific, so be prepared to expect similar quality from City.

Electric City will be an internet-based animated series focused on an optimistic technology-based futuristic society. Hanks was slightly cryptic in his description of the show, but in a recent interview he described the project as “a very gripping, almost film-noir, very serious look at a future that was not a dysfunctional dystopia, that an awful lot of the future things are.” Wait a second, whenever I heard the terms “film-noir” and “dysfunctional dystopia” in the same sentence and I get excited to the point of epilepsy. Images of Dark City flood my brain and I am rendered excited to an unfair degree that essentially dooms the project to failure because it could never live up to the expectations I have assembled in my head. Let’s pray Hanks brings us something special.

Wonder Woman Returns

This project has been in developmental hell for several years, but there may finally be an end to the pre-production nightmare. After Joss Whedon finally gave up, David E. Kelly (yeah the dude behind such lawyering shows as Ally McBeal and The Practice) has stepped behind the project, determined to bring the show to television. Kelley supposedly met with the DC team to talk about the Amazonian princess recently, but I’ll believe this one when I see it in action.

The Old Spice Guy Campaigns

Of all the cool casting news that has come out recently, this one has me the most excited. Isaiah Mustafa, more affectionately known as “that Old Spice guy” recently started a campaign to be cast in whatever Avengers film will eventually have Luke Cage. The super strong, super durable, super healing, and super skilled street fighter probably won’t be appearing in The Avengers film slated for 2012, but if he does eventually show up why not give the role to Mustafa. Casting him as Cage would push the film into serious hard-core fanboydom, something that the series might need to combat the level of mainstreamdom the Marvel Universe has achieved as of late.
