Don’t get your hopes up. It’s not like Activision is just giving out copies of this game for free now, although that would be pretty awesome. Instead, they are letting everyone own the game for a weekend, and see what the hype is all about. So if you just so happen to have a gaming PC, you are in luck. The big promotion started this past Thursday at 4 PM PDT. If you have steam, you can start downloading the game right now!

Unfortunately, you will not be able to play through the game’s single player campaign during this free weekend. However, you still get the entirety of the Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer experience. This means every gun, every map, everything that you would get if you actually owned the game. Yes, this also includes any additional content that has released since the game has come out. Since multiplayer is basically what gives this game its massive replay value, it’s a good move on Activision’s part to give us that part for free. Of course, all the newbies who are entering the Modern Warfare 2 world for the first time will probably be squashed by veterans who are a much higher level than they are, but the same would be true if they decided to buy the game randomly, so whatever.

After this weekend’s free trial, be on the lookout for Modern Warfare 2 sales and bundle packages over steam. Activision has a habit of putting their games on sale after a long free trial, and hopefully the same will be true about Modern Warfare 2. Get in on the craze everyone else knows about already, for free! You will certainly get your money’s worth…
