More Marvel Vs Capcom 3 — Joe and Dormammu Details
Recently, two new trailers were released for Marvel VS Capcom 3 that detailed the two newest entrants: Viewtiful Joe and The Dread Dormammu. Previously, we opened up a speculative discussion about their move sets based on a bunch of screen caps that we saw off Kotaku, taken at Gamescom. However, this new trailer actually shows them in action, so we have a bit more info about how they play. Both characters have more tools in their arsenal than we originally expected, and should be popular characters in the Marvel VS Capcom 3 scene. Let’s take a look at some of the details we squeezed out of this video.
As theorized, Dormammu is large, slow, and powerful. He is not anywhere near as slow as The Hulk, but he is still a good bit slower than most of the other characters on the roster. He seems to be taking a cue from Blackheart’s move set in previous Marvel games. He has a wide, powerful, anti-air beam column that he can throw out at variable points on the screen, and he also has Blackheart’s meteor rain special as well. He has a multi-hit black-hole area-denial ability which actually seems to transition into his combos very well. His flame pillar hits characters that are on the ground and pops them up for a second go at an air combo, which is extremely useful even though its start up lag is quite abysmal. His inferno type super works exactly as we thought it did, a whole screen beam super, but he also seems to have a remote detonation bomb super too, which will most likely work its way into many of his combos. Overall, he seems to have the flavor of Blackheart while being far more playable as an on-screen character. Oh yeah, and he can fly, so expect a lot of triangle jumping shenanigans. One last thing, the trailer shows the existence of character specific intros and death calls. For example, when Dormammu faces Dante in the trailer he says, “I shall strike you down demon hunter” which doesn’t make a whole lot of sense when said to any character but Dante.
Joe on the other hand does in fact play like his Tatsunoko VS Capcom incarnation, but much better. For example, his Six Cannon special no longer has the massive start up time it had in TVC. Instead, it fires instantly, and can be aimed by pressing a direction during start up. Joe’s other moves have gotten a bit of an overhaul as well. For example, his Red Hot Kick now gives him more mobility in the air and allows him to extend his air-combos, and he has more multiple hit aerial moves than he did in TVC. Overall, his entire play style seems geared toward the air at this point, even more so than it was in TVC. His Mach Speed super, for example, now ends with an uppercut that acts as a launcher and a jump follow up at the same time. On the ground he still has his voomerang and bomb specials, but both of them seem to have gotten an upgrade as well. Multiple instances of both can be on the screen at once, and his voomerang can be charged up until it is on fire, allowing him to play keep-away when he isn’t air-comboing his opponent.
Overall, both of these characters look like a blast to play. Hopefully we won’t have to unlock them or some stupid shit like that come the game’s release. Now the question is, who is joining the roster next?
