Mortal Kombat Gets Two Returning Fighters

Many people called last year the fighting game renaissance. All the major franchises came back with new iterations that finally put fighting games back in the spotlight. While some companies like Capcom and Arc System Works produced massive hits like Street Fighter IV and BlazBlue, others put out titles that weren’t the greatest, like King of Fighters XII and Mortal Kombat VS DC Universe. Well, this year is the year when many fighting game companies have to nut up or shut up, as their footholds in the industry are either being solidified by powerful sequels such as Marvel VS Capcom 3 or Super Street Fighter IV, or they are scrambling to get back on top with grand returns to form like King of Fighters XIII and the new Mortal Kombat.

If there is any development team that has a lot to prove in the fighting game race it’s the Mortal Kombat team. Now that Midway is defunct, NetherRealm Studios, the inheritors of the franchise, are doing their best to make Mortal Kombat the successful franchise it once was back in the days of the SNES. Along with a grand return to the realm of 2-D graphics, they are also showcasing a wide roster of classic MK characters that fight similarly to how they did back in the days of 16 bit graphics, and Gamescom marks the unveiling of two more fighters to join the roster.

In previous Mortal Kombat builds, we got to see Sektor and Mileena in action. Sektor looked much like the Sektor of Mortal Kombat’s past, other than a slightly slimmer armor design, and Mileena looked almost exactly as her character model did in the 16 bit days. Kitana, however, has an updated character model with long flowing hair and, oddly enough, even skimpier clothing, while Cyrax looks more mechanical and futuristic than ever.

As far as their move lists go, we haven’t seen anything beyond a few isolated screen captures, so we don’t really know how they play. However, we have seen Kitana using her anti-air fan attack, which is an old staple from the days of Mortal Kombat 2. We also have seen Cyrax’s digital net, which you may remember from games past, so most likely their move lists will remain intact.

Many fans believe we will see the entirety of the Mortal Kombat 2 roster return for the new Mortal Kombat reboot. We can only hope so. What do you think?
