Mortal Kombat — The Mystery Is Solved But We Still Want More

Earlier this week the net was all atwitter about the Mortal Kombat Rebirth “trailer” that had been uploaded to youtube. Watch the video here and try to not freak out about the dark, grittiness that would make The Dark Knight jealous. There is no doubt that if this were adapted into a full feature-length script that it would be completely insane.

Well the mystery has been solved! Ed Boon, alongside Warner Bros., has just explained the origins of the trailer mark the triumphant relaunch of the video game franchise. This new Mortal Kombat appears to follow the physics of the old Mortal Kombats with a slightly heavier focus on combos. Basic punches and kicks slowly knock the opponent backward, and you will have to use projectiles, teleports, or expansion type moves to keep up and continue the hurt. Juggles seem to be the combo flavor of the day, as the majority of the damage seems to be dealt while the opponent is flailing helplessly in mid-air. The fighting is entirely 2-D with the camera swinging into 3-D only when particularly brutal moves are being used. So yes, it is a lot like the Street Fighter IV model, but that model worked for Capcom and it will work for the Mortal Kombat team as well.

This new Mortal Kombat comes with a few other new features too. Tag combat seems to be included. Characters are able to switch in and out in the middle of combos much like Tekken Tag Tournament. However, characters are also able to call in their partner for a one hit assist attack, much like Capcom’s Versus series. Purists will still be able to play the game in 1v1 mode. The game will also feature a full suite of online options and can even allow 4 players to fight at once. It’s quite the tool set for a MK revival.

The fatalities are full 3-D and are bloodier than ever, fully taking advantage of the game’s new graphics engine. You will see shattered bones, punctured organs, and hell there is one scene in the trailer where Kung Lao cuts Sub-Zero in half from the crotch up. Delicious! WB says that the game will have “the deepest story of any fighting game.” Will they be able to make us care about the plot outside of the blood and gore? Not likely but the game still looks like it will kick ass.

Confirmed characters include Shao Kahn, Raiden, Johnny Cage, Reptile, Sub-Zero, Nightwolf, Mileena, and Sektor, but we most likely can look forward to seeing the entire cast of MK1 return and most of the cast of MK2 if not all of it. Ed Boon, father Mortal Kombat himself is working on the game with the new Chicago-based NetherRealm Studios.

It looks like we will have to wait for the latest incarnation of Mortal Kombat for at least another year. Considering the sweet production values on the video, it looks like this will be the marquee game of the franchise. Could their be more video debuted at E3 this year? We certainly hope so, and we’ll make sure to keep you updated during out Los Angeles E3 adventure.
