No Rock Band 4 For 2011
A while back, we reported that Activision was going to take a break from its Guitar Hero franchise and the music game genre in general. We thought that the entire music game market would be run over by Harmonix and Rock Band, but it appears as if they too are taking this chance to take a much needed break from Music Game design. Chris Rigopulos, VP of Strategy and Business Development for Harmonix told Game Informer that Harmonix is “not planning a Rock Band 4 disc release in 2011.”
Why are the Rock Band team taking a break? Well, there is no particular need for a new Rock Band at this point. Rock Band 3 had so many options, instruments, pro-mode, various difficulties, and at this point over two thousand songs between all the importing from past disks and downloadable content. Really, all that Harmonix needs to do is focus on bringing out more DLC, and using the Rock Band 3 platform they already established. “Rock Band 3 is a big game with lots of available music content and lots of new goals and challenges,” said Rigopulos. “We want to give our fans the time to explore that fully. But rest assured that Harmonix is still developing new ideas and concepts to advance the Rock Band franchise, and we look forward to sharing those when the time is right.”
They certainly aren’t dropping support for the Rock Band online music store any time soon. In May, new tracks from the Foo Fighters, Lady Gaga, and Ozzy Osbourne will be coming to the market. In addition, Peter Frampton’s “Do You Feel Like We Do” from Frampton Comes Alive will be a new available track as well. That’s thirteen minutes of continuous jamming on plastic instruments. What more do you want?
Most likely Harmonix is taking time away from Rock Band to focus on its other successful property, Dance Central. It is already rumored that Harmonix has a Dance Central sequel in the making. We will bring you more info from the Harmonix booth this year at E3.
