November Movies — Thrills and … More Thrills
We may have gotten all of the movie monsters and serial murderers out of our systems with traditionally spooky October, but thrillers extend way beyond plain old horror movies. Unfortunately, in October, any sort of thriller is dwarfed by the big horror releases. Hell, even if your October is abnormally dry in terms of horror, you still can count on a new Saw movie coming out, or something. So studios tend to hold on to their more innovative thrillers for the month after to keep us on our toes between raking leaves and gorging ourselves on turkey. So, while November may not be the month of bloody murders and creatures from the deep, you can expect to see corrupt cops, alien abductions, and strange packages with blinking red buttons on them. October may scare you out of your seat, but November will screw with your mind. Why go to see yet another Christmas special when you can instead see a movie like …
The Fourth Kind — November 6, 2009
Do you believe in aliens? Well if you don’t you should because they are behind you right now! Gotcha! Anyway, that’s sort of what the plot of The Fourth Kind is all about. It is a thriller that uses “archival” footage integrated in with the normal film footage. Milla Jovovich plays Dr. Abigail Tyler, and recounts her journey to Nome, Alaska, where supposedly many people have fallen victim to alien abductions. These aren’t your grandma’s alien abductions though; they are horrifying encounters that shake their victims to their very souls. Long story short, this movie is not for the weak of heart, because according to this movie, the truth may very well drive you insane. It’s a good thing we at 30ninjas are already insane.
The Box — November 6, 2009
You know, when we first heard that The Box was based off an old Twilight Zone episode, we were excited. Then we remembered that movies are about four times as long as Twilight Zone episodes. Considering that this is one of those “what if” episodes, specifically “what if you could gain a million dollars at the cost of killing one random person.” So, no, we don’t know what they are going to fill the other hour and a half with, but it appears as if most of it is going to be explosions, gunshots, and creepy people staring at you. Remember when your mother always used to tell you that if you stared into Santa’s eyes too long you would be hit by a Mack truck. No? Well you should have listened closer.
The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans — November 20, 2009 (NY, LA; expands: Dec. 4)
Enough time has passed so that we as a society can start talking about Hurricane Katrina again. While we used to only hear stories about the brave rescuers who saved lives and the families who lost everything only to gain it back later, now we are seeing the darker side of this natural disaster, primarily through Nicolas Cage. He plays a cop who after Katrina ends up descending into the dark underworld of Louisiana. He becomes addicted to drugs, wrapped up in gang violence, and begins to play fast and loose with the law. He is good at what he does, but he is an incredibly bad cop, whose life is complicated more once he falls in love with a prostitute. The ruins of New Orleans are his playground, but he is playing with bullets. This movie is deep, dark, and awesome, with plenty of action, and just enough fucked up humor to keep us laughing.
