Proving once more that you don’t always need a bunch of money and special effects to make a story entertaining, Paranormal Activity is delivering big returns for Paramount at the box office. Variety is reports the Paranormal‘s box office returns at a cume of $62.5 million which is amazing since they spent only $11,000 on production and approximately $10 million on marketing.

This has lead Saw fans everywhere to yell “AAAAAAAAAAH SAW” but more importantly it has caused Oren Peli to yell “AAAAAAAAAAH SEQUEL!” Paramount already owns the rights, so now the question is “whether or not it makes sense” according to Paramount chairman Brad Grey.

Becoming the biggest box office phenomenon of the year, Paramount’s microbudgeted horror pic “Paranormal Activity” toppled “Saw VI” to win the weekend at $22 million from 1,945 theaters and hit an out-of-this-world cume of $62.5 million.

“Saw VI,” coming in No. 2, opened to an estimated $14.8 million from 3,036 theaters — an opening gross less than half that of any of the previous four films in the horror franchise. It also came in below the original “Saw” (2004), which opened just north of $18 million. Lionsgate was quick to assure that the franchise will continue.

Let’s hope Paranormal‘s writer-director Oren Peli doesn’t make the same mistake the Blair Witch Project‘s filmmakers made by spending the next few years remaking their first success. We’re hoping for great things Oren, don’t disappoint us! Take a page from Saw, Peli! A sequel doesn’t have to make sense, it just has to be awesome!
