Rock Band 3 = Keyboard Hero?

There is a demo for Rock Band Green Day up on Xbox Live, and as I figured before, people aren’t playing Rock Band Green Day for … well … Green Day. While I could trash on Green Day’s music and the peculiar choice to have an entire Rock Band featuring their body of work (shut up, I listened to Green Day in middle school too OK?) I won’t. Instead, there is just one tiny image that shows up at the end of the Rock Band Green Day demo that makes us all excited here over at 30ninjas. We all enjoy the ability to pick up plastic tinker toys and pretend that we are the awesome rock stars of old, and while we are familiar with the clicking of the plastic guitar, the pounding of the plastic drum, and the cracking of the tone deaf voice, we will now be able to see people go to town on a plastic keyboard!

We are excited about being able to tickle some ivory in a Rock Band setting, but this brings up a couple questions. For one, will there be enough songs with a keyboard accompaniment to flesh out a song list. Two, does this mean that Rock Band 3 won’t be backward compatible like Rock Band 2 was? What will happen to all of the songs from Rock Band 2 and Rock Band 1? More importantly, what will happen to all of our downloaded tracks that don’t have keyboard notes in them? Are we going to get updated versions with keyboard tracks or will the keyboard simply be ignored in older songs? Does this mean that the keyboarder will only get to play sometimes? That would suck.

More questions come up in terms of the game’s interface. We already have most of the screen taken up by the four instruments that Rock Band already employs. Where on earth would the fifth one go? Also, will this also make our Rock Band connector, which only has 4 ports on a USB hub, obselete? Will the keyboard be wireless or will it also connect via USB? How will the keyboardist activate overdrive (star power for you Guitar Hero fans)? Heck, we just want to know what sort of role our new mock keyboardist band member could have.

Also, perhaps most importantly, how the hell am I going to get five people together at the same time who all want to pretend to be rock stars!

Hopefully some of these questions will be answered at E3.
