Rome Movie Moves Forward to Germany
Back in 2008 we got word that there may end up being a movie based on the HBO series Rome. We were big Rome fanboys back in the day, and by back in the day we mean a couple years ago when we watched it religiously. The idea of Rome getting its own movie, which we tentatively assumed would be titled “Titus Pullo Kills Everyone Ever” was very exciting to us.
Well, “Titus Pullo Kills Everyone Ever” didn’t go over so well in the marketing department, but thankfully Bruno Heller completed a script with a whole other plot, and it actually sounds halfway decent. The idea is that the movie picks up with Pullo and Vorenus heading to Germany to fight the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest. Of course, historically speaking, this battle took place 50-ish years after the series ended, but who is counting. As long as Vorenus and Pullo get to kill people in interesting ways we are all for it.
Speaking of Vorenus and Pullo, Kevin McKidd and Ray Stevenson are apparently all for this project, but not in any sort of official capacity. Both seem to be excited to once again step into their iconic characters, but their involvement in the project basically exists in rumor only. There have been talks about bringing both on board, but in the end it has been nothing more than ideas being kicked around. Considering that HBO films won’t be involved, the search for a director, staff, and the rest of the cast will be quite challenging, even if the two protagonists are all ready to go.
Also, there is that sticky little business of Vorenus dying at the end of the series. We are fairly certain that this series isn’t going to go the way of zombies any time soon. Then again, Vorenus did die off camera, and he was wanted by the state at the time. Death would be his perfect cover to live a peaceful life. Of course, how Vorenus and Pullo would get back together again after such a ploy is beyond us, but then again, that is why we aren’t script writers.
The biggest problem this project will encounter is time. It has already been a few years since Rome stopped airing, and while we all hold the series within our hearts, it is certainly not the first movie we think of when we say “big summer blockbuster.” If they just completed the script, then there is still a lot of work left to be done before this hits the big screen. We could assume 1-3 years before we actually see the finished product, which may in fact be too long to ride the Rome buzz. No one wants to see Rome go out on a whimper of a movie.
Still, with die-hard Rome fans and Kevin McKidd fangirls, there is a decent fanbase that this movie will appeal to. Honestly, if we get to see Pullo stab someone in the face, then that is good enough for us. We will give you more details as they become available. [Entertainment Weekly]
