Sam Worthington To Star in . . . Everything!!!

Worthington’s performances in both Terminator and Avatar were strong. He went blow for blow with Christian Bale in Terminator, which is no small feat considering how angry that dude can get, and even though he was a giant blue humanoid in Avatar, his expression and passion show through. He’s a good actor . . . OK maybe not to the point of being cast in every hollywood blockbuster, but I wouldn’t object to seeing him spring into heroic action a few more times this year. And in all likelihood I will probably get the chance. Since his breakthrough role as conflicted cyborg Marcus Wright in Terminator: Salvation, Worthington has taken over the realm of Sci-Fi/Fantasy leading men to the point of monopoly with lead roles in Avatar and the upcoming Clash of the Titans. Any film with a heroic protag that makes its way through the rumor blogs has his named attached to it. The iron is hot and Worthington is certainly striking. Here is a list of what could be in store for the intense aussie over the next couple years:

The Texas Killing Fields

TKF apparently has a killer script and if it is produced by Michael Mann, which it looks like it is going to be, we can probably expect this film to be gloriously gritty. Worthington has confirmed his involvement with the project which recounts the true story of two detectives who attempt to uncover the mystery of twenty years worth of murders and disappearances in Texas. Worthington’s co-star is as of now unconfirmed, but The Hangover‘s Bradley Cooper has been loosely linked to the project. It will be interesting to see if Worthington can handle headlining a film outside of the Sci-Fi/Fantasy genre, and if Bradley Cooper can manage starring in some heavier fare than he is accustomed to. This could be the film that establishes Sam Worthington and Bradley Cooper as the leading men of hollywood. It could also be the film that proves that Ami Mann, the director of the film, can do more than direct an episode of Friday Night Lights.

Dracula

The latest rumors circulating film blogs hint at Sam Worthington playing the title role in the latest reincarnation of everyones favorite bloodsucker, no not that sparkly master of tween, the original one. Dracula Year Zero has apparently attached Worthington to the project under the leadership of Alex Proya, director of I, Robot and the seriously under-rated Dark City. As long as they don’t have Worthington pull a Gary Oldman in Dracula and wear some fruity purple glasses I’m fine with this choice.

Batman

The sparring that Worthington did with Terminator co-star Bale led to rumors of the aussie taking over the role of Bruce Wayne in the Batman series. Ridiculous? Yes. Unfounded? Sure. But a pretty good choice to take over for Bale? I think so. He may not be as tall or intimidating, but Worthington can be as intense as an Everest mountain climber. At this point in the series Bruce Wayne certainly doesn’t need any revamping (I’m still not convinced that he did in the early 90′s after Batman Returns) though maybe some post-production work could be done on his voice. Am I the only one who noticed that Batman’s voice sounds like he has been gargling with gravel? I know they are trying to make him sound like a bad-ass who doesn’t take any shit from anyone, but it really just makes him sound like he’s trying too hard.

Flash Gordon & Green Lantern

I wouldn’t put it past studios to link Worthington to different projects to build buzz around them but this is ridiculous. Flash Gordon and Green Lantern have been flat-out denied by both studios and Worthington himself. But things may not be as cut and dry as they seem. Both Sam Worthington and Ryan Reynolds were rumored to be the finalists for both the speedy Steven Gordon and the viridian Alan Scott. Reynolds is now fully committed to Green Lantern, so the next logical step is . . .

Captain America

At a recent press junket Worthington appeared in an Avengers t-shirt and fans lost their shit. Rumors flew and by the end of the day everyone was convinced that he was the next Steven Rogers.

I know, the bloggers are going bananas. “I’m a fan, man. I’m a big fan. And I’ve always said, if you’re going to wear a shirt on a blog or the TV, wear something you’re interested in. I’m not a billboard, so I’m going to wear something that I’m intrigued by. I’m a big Captain America fan

It’s funny that all Worthington has to say is that he is a fan of the comic book and all of a sudden he is the leader of The Avengers

Mad Max

As for Mad Max I can only assume that he has been linked to the dystopian biker saga because he is the biggest Australian actor of the moment. But, with the fourth film in the series scheduled for a 2011 release, the producers better book Worthington soon. Britain’s Nicholas Hoult has cast as Nux, but no one actually knows how big of a role it is. As far as we know the search is still on for Mel’s replacement.

Wait, how tall is he?…

For your piece on Sam starring in “everything”,I don’t really know why all of a sudden, they’re tryin to make him the next “Russell Crowe”,imo,he’s not that good, and he merely got lucky in gettin all the good reviews in TS last Summer.Christian had just been embarrassed in the media by the leaking of the “rant”,and Sam benefited from all the criticism Christian was getting, but let’s hold on here a minute,he is NOWHERE near the actor Christian Bale is,so let’s just get that out on right now.He was not even nominated for an Oscar for his performance in “Avatar”,simply because it wasn’t good enough, and everyone was sayin he “stole the show” in TS,but guess who stole the show in “Avatar”? None other than Stephen Lang!!! This guy can act!!! He did well with what he was given, and he worked it!!! It’s funny, all those who were braggin about how good Sam did in TS,now you can literally hear a pin drop, they’re so quiet.I haven’t heard one critic raving about his performance in “Avatar”,why is that? Hmmm,oh,I know,he’s not all what he’s cracked up to be,they only wanted to beat up on Christian Bale,by raving about Sam’s performance in TS.He’s no Christian Bale, nor will he ever take over the role as Batman,he doesn’t have the ballz, height, the sex appeal, the stature,or the depth and range Christian has, period!!! He is NOT a good choice,no way!!! If for some reason,Christian doesn’t make another Batman, I tell you who would be a good replacement,Paul Walker. He’s handsome,he’s tall, and he’s a pretty intense actor.I think he would make a very good Batman, and a sexy Bruce Wayne.Sam is not the type, not for this role.

Worthington does seem to be falling into the Russell Crowe mold, I like that comparison! And I think that there is a definite danger of him pulling a Tom Cruise where he is just playing himself in every movie. The fact is, it’s difficult to evaluate someone’s acting prowess in action films. In general, the acting is not the focus of the film. In regards to casting Paul Walker as Batman . . . probably not. He was actually surprisingly good in Running Scared, but for every movie like that he has an Into the Blue. Im also pretty sure I don’t want my Bruce Wayne using the word “bra”.
