Silent Hill 2 Has a Film Date

As far as video game movies go, Silent Hill wasn’t the worst, but as popular as it may or may not have been it sure as hell is having a hard time getting a sequel. It all started when their writer, Roger Avary went to jail for gross vehicular manslaughter. You heard me. Gross. Vehicular. Manslaughter. This guy won an Oscar for Pulp Fiction and he is doing time for causing a 100mph drunken car crash. Wonderful … Well, of course, having the lead writer end up in jail means the project needs a new writing team. That is unfortunate because the team also needs a new director, because the original director Christophe Gans won’t be returning.

Then there is the problem of plot. Apparently, the original Silent Hill movie simply wasn’t accessible to most movie goers out there. In an interview a while back with Shock Till You Drop, producer Don Carmody said:

“I think we need to make it a little more accessible to the movie-going public. Silent Hill is not a blockbuster game like Resident Evil or the other games out there. It’s a connoisseurs’ game. It has its own, rabid fan base. They’re not cheap, these things. You have to appeal not only to the gamers, you have to appeal to a wider audience. So we have to get some story in there that helps explain a bit more. I think that’s all happening. Of course, [the story] is going to happen years later and the main character – without giving too much away – is much older and representative to the movie-going public which is in that age group.”

Right … Silent Hill isn’t a blockbuster game. It just defined non-action survival horror as we know it. Right …

Well anyway, as you can expect, this has caused more than a bit of hatemail to flow in Carmody’s direction. The decision to make a video game themed movie better by telling the video game canon to fuck off is a bold one. In fact, desire for the Silent Hill movie sequel NOT to be made is at an all time high, and Carmody knows that. In an interview with Fear.net, Carmody said:

“We have always been cognizant of that — we can’t make the movies just for gamers. Of course, we always run the risk of incurring the wrath of the gamers — who are very vocal. I did Silent Hill and we are planning a Silent Hill 2 — we were getting hate mail for that one.”

Despite all of this, Silent Hill 2 is going to begin filming this coming spring in Toronto. So there you have it. The gaming public doesn’t want it to happen. The team is splintered, fractured, and in jail. The plot is going to be dumbed down to the lowest common denominator. Despite all of this, Silent Hill 2 is still happening. Be sure to watch this one while drunk.
