Sony Patents PS3 Slim PS2 Player
When then PS3 received its massive price drop, the world of Playstation gaming opened up to a massive demographic that previously was excluded for nothing other than monetary reasons. However, with this price drop came another drop that caused some controversy. PS3 slims were unable to play PS2 games. Though you could still get PS1 games over the internet, PS2 games were regulated to their system of origin only. This was a double whammy considering that the slim PS3 still has the ability to create virtual PS2 memory cards, but not play PS2 games.
Well, Sony has come up with a solution, or at least they have patented a possible solution. The idea, is to sell a PS2 without a disk drive. Simply put, Sony would create a box that includes a CPU, memory, GPU, and RAM that has similar specs to the Playstation 2. You would plug it into the back of your PS3 and then use your PS3’s disk drive to play the PS2 game itself. Yes, this means you would still have to insert your original PS2 game into the disk drive, but you would be able to save all your data to the PS3 hard-drive.
The problem is cost. There is no particular impetus to purchase an expensive PS2 adapter, when at this point you can drop 50 dollars or less on a used PS2. Not to mention there are a bunch of original PS3 owners that don’t need it, and a bunch of slim PS3 owners that don’t want it. Factor in the amount of people who still own a working PS2 and you will find that the market for such a device is exceedingly small. The reason that Sony took away backwards compatibility in the first place, was that they felt gamers who were interested in purchasing a PS3 simply weren’t interested in spending extra money for a backward compatibility option, and they are right. Backward compatibility is a perk, not a necessity. It would be nice to have it, but we aren’t going to flip our shit if we don’t have it.
Besides, there are better ways to implement this sort of thing anyway. PS2 games can be released via the Playstation store just fine. We already saw a working port of Marvel VS Capcom 2, and that was basically a PS2 era game. If it’s possible just with the specs the PS3 has, Sony might be able to release a firmware update that allows PS2 games to be played software side. Honestly, when it comes down to it, I don’t even really care about PS2 compatibility. What I really would like to see is PSP compatibility. There are tons of PSP games I want to play, and I just don’t want to drop the cash on a PSP. Give me a PS3 PSP emulator any day.

This patent may be a preventive patent. The device may have been patented to keep anyone else from making one not as an actual product to sell.
Reports say that they’re planning to fix ps2 games to be “playable” on ps3, or something like that. Awesomeness? Not really. They’re planning to sell some USB stuffs to be connected to ps3 so that ps2 games could be played on it. Better play it on the ps2.

I feel we should not have to hand over a big chunk of change for another sony system to plug into our PS3′s to play our PS2 games. It would be much easier to add a data program to do the same thing and it would be more cost effective.
