Splinter Cel Advertising Almost Gets Someone Shot!
Advertising is a dangerous thing! In today’s society, sometimes you need to do some really crazy shit just to get people to notice you. Viral videos are an important part of marketing on the festering cesspool of memes we know as the internet. However, some people just can’t take a joke. Just ask the promoters of Splinter Cell Conviction. They almost got shot in New Zealand. No fooling!
It’s very simple, some dude in Splinter Cell cosplay walked into a happening nightclub. Totally getting into his role, he drew a fake pistol, pointed it at patrons, who, assuming it was a real pistol, immediately dove for cover and called the cops. This would make these patrons good Splinter Cell players, but I’m sure they weren’t as amused in real life. Anyway, the police came and quickly subdued our Splinter Cell impersonator. Luckily, they figured out that the gun was fake before anyone got hurt.
To rub salt in the wound, the Monaco Corporation, the company in charge of this stunt, apparently had no idea the stunt was even going to happen. The Monaco Corporation is the marketing partner of Ubisoft, and was hired to come up with a good marketing campaign for Splinter Cell. However, the Monaco Corporation actually outsourced the marketing job, instead hiring another marketing company to put the whole event together. Apparently, no one in the Monaco Corporation had any idea that a gun, real or fake, was to be used in such a manner. In fact, no one was even aware that this was the nature of the marketing event. A Monaco representative said, “It was never our intention to get the police down here … it was just marketing gone wrong.” Damn straight it was.
Two men were cautioned on the scene but no men were arrested. The police simply chalked this up to another dumb and ill-advised stunt.
