Sports Your Parents Never Played
Gliders
We all made paper airplanes as children, it was part of every kid’s fascination with astronauts and pilots. These guys never really grew out of that phase of their lives. The concept of an immature sport born from the fantasies of children is quickly washed away one you see how painstaking and intricate these plane designs are. They also fly for up to 30 minutes! If dragonflies were made from wood and plastic this is probably what they would look like.
Origami
You can tell that I’m really stretching the term “sport” here. This high-production value commercial makes advertisements from the Superbowl look like the amateur brainstorming sessions of your 8-year-old “filmmaker” cousin Matty. The Japanese art of paper craft Origami combines with the dream of a shoemaker to create a unique commercial experience. I especially like the inspiration derived from the suction cups of an octopus. Folding paper could be considered a sport right? Right?!
Turbo
It would be too easy to take some clips from Tron and post them under the moniker “cyber sports”. But cyber sports have a rich tradition in film, particularly short films. Turbo features a game called Super Turbo Arena, and it looks like things get way more aggressive in cyberspace than they ever could in the real world (just look to The Matrix if you don’t believe me). Turbo features Justin Chon (Twilight) and David Lehre (Epic Movie) in a tale that takes a cyber look at gladiatorial competition (the SFX seriously look like they could have been spliced right into Tron).
Hugo Park is a troubled youth whose only outlet for angst is a 4D fighting video game called “Super Turbo Arena”. When Pharaoh King, the Michael Jordan of cyber-sports, announces a tournament to determine who will join his pro-team, Hugo’s sets his eyes on the prize. But, Hugo isn’t the only gamer who wants fame and glory. If Hugo wants to win he’s going to have to beat Shamus, the all time Turbo champ at the local Pandemonium arcade, and Ruse Kapri, a feisty prep girl that knows how to win. Realizing he can’t win on his skill alone, Hugo turns to his brother Tobias a former kick-boxer whose last match left him wheel-chair ridden. Together the two will mend old wounds and see if a washed up street fighter can teach a troubled teen how to become a virtual gladiator!
Wheelskates
Rollerblading is so 90s. So how do we take a sport that is identified by a particular decade and update it for athletes with more modern and extreme tastes? Make the wheels huge and market it for the more outdoorsy types. Introducing the Wheelskate.
Midnight Surfing
The verdict is still out as to whether or not this is video is real, but if it is I officially have a new favorite sport: Midnight Surfing! Because the heat the sun provides causes high and low pressure systems, wind is a result of the sun. Without the sun there would be no wind, hence, way better surfing conditions at night! This bro crushes a near perfect liquid monster at the witching hour and lives to tell about it.
