Tekken X Street Fighter Is Falling Behind

Yoshinori Ono and Katsuhiro Harada promised us that we would get a chance to see Tekken X Street Fighter in action at this year’s GamesCom. Unfortunately, that promise didn’t come true. This game, one half of the Namco VS Capcom project, will feature Tekken and Street Fighter characters duking it out in the Tekken 6 engine. It’s sister game, Street Fighter X Tekken, will feature Street Fighter and Tekken characters duking it out in the Street Fighter IV engine, and already had a full gameplay preview at Comic-Con this year. So Tekken X Street Fighter looks as if it’s a little behind the curve all things considered.

Katsurhiro Harada actually admitted this at Gamescom, saying that the Tekken team is very busy with other projects, specifically the next Tekken. Thus, Tekken X Street Fighter probably won’t ship until after Street Fighter X Tekken is on the shelves. Yoshinori Ono was quick to give fans yet another gameplay preview of Street Fighter X Tekken, always jumping on a chance to show up Harada’s hard work. On the upside, this does mean that Tekken 7 is probably well underway, if its development is somehow interfering with the development of Tekken X Street Fighter.

Harada did offer a small consolation prize to the audience, however. He gave them a sneak peek at what Ryu would look like in the game. The 3-D model was not yet totally finished as they had not yet added lighting effects, or even a proper gi for that matter. The model was instead wearing Paul’s gi, and acted a bit more like a face swap than anything else. However, the face swap was impressive. They got Ryu down right to his scruffy hair and red headband (although the headband didn’t actually have a whole lot of texture to it when you compare it to the gi). It’s a good start at least.

Harada was very apologetic to the fans toward the end of the panel. He asked them not to worry much about the prototype state of Tekken X Street Fighter, saying that the final product will be much more spectacular than this small preview model. He then begged fans to keep groaning on Facebook, Twitter, and internet blogs to a minimum, as it could possibly kill the hype for the whole game. Well, at least Harada is being honest with us.

We still have no information on how the Street Fighter characters will operate in the Tekken fighting system. Tekken is much more about up close fighting while Street Fighter focuses on projectiles and spacing. However, it was proven that Tekken characters can be altered to fit a Street Fighter mold. Most likely, Ryu’s fireballs will become far less effective, but he should still be able to fit into a Tekken mold all the same. Harada has promised us more details on the game as the year goes on, so we most likely will hear some new announcements sometime around holiday season this year.
