The Avengers — The Third Bruce Banner of the Decade
You wouldn’t like Marvel when they are angry!
It looks like the fight over the cast of The Avengers might be bigger than the actual superhero battles in the film. The newest skirmish is between Edward Norton, star of the The Incredible Hulk, and Marvel, who are looking to replace the actor. Harsh words have been exchanged, with Marvel claiming that Norton does not work well with others. Nonetheless, Norton’s agent, responding to this kindergarten-style criticism, has lashed out against Marvel in defense of his client’s talent and integrity. So Ed Norton is standing up for himself, but it doesn’t look like he’s getting his role back.
The newest rumor spreading across the internet like a big batch of Peter Parker webbing is that Joaquin Phoenix has been offered the part of Bruce Banner. You may remember Phoenix from his roles in Gladiator and Walk the Line, or for his infamous bomb on Letterman. Phoenix would be an interesting choice for the studio to make; despite his recent rampage through the realm of mediocrity, Phoenix is a talented actor. However, he’s not known by studios for being easy to work with, either. Dumping Norton for Phoenix seems counter-productive, as they are both talented, possibly tormented actors, but only one of them played the Hulk already. No news yet on whether Phoenix has accepted the offer—he may want to continue his rapping “career”—or if an offer has actually been made. So far this is just a rumor; the part could end up going to a relative unknown that the studio can lowball to cut the costs of an inevitably expensive superhero movie.
Joss Whedon’s The Avengers is slated to be released in 2012 and will feature Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, and Nick Fury, among other Marvel stars.
