February Nuts: Insanity Is Contagious in The Crazies and Shutter Island
It’s pretty obvious that we’re putting The Crazies and Shutter Island together because they’re both dealing with craziness. The Crazies kind of qualifies as horror and Shutter Island kind of qualifies as … actually we aren’t sure what it qualifies as, but it does have Leonardo DiCaprio in a straight jacket, and that is a plus for any movie. The only recurring theme the two have is insanity, and we suppose that insanity is reason enough to go see any movie. So here are our final two recommendations of February 2010, the crazy movies. Just be happy that we didn’t write this in a padded cell with our own feces.
The Crazies
We really want to say that this is a zombie movie. It has all the symptoms of a zombie movie. It has crazy people, who are supposedly going psycho due to some strange disease. It has raving mad people that look like walking corpses. It has people stockpiling weapons and killing everyone around them. It looks, smells, and tastes like a zombie movie. Hell the original was directed by George Frickin’ Romero! The thing is, it’s not a zombie movie. It is a movie about infectious madness and the quarantine that basically screws over anyone inside the town. So while it may be fun to watch Timothy Olyphant, Radha Mitchell, Danielle Panabaker, and Joe Anderson slowly die to whatever is eating away at this town’s mind, remember that this is most certainly not a zombie movie. We repeat, this is not a zombie movie. Unfortunately, the only thing that could make this movie better is making it a zombie movie. Oh well, we still recommend it. Besides, non-zombies are also scary, because you are surrounded by them every day!
Shutter Island
It’s been a while since we saw a good new Martin Scorsese film. Shutter Island is about a criminally insane murderess who suddenly disappears into thin air once committed to a maximum security mental asylum. The titular asylum just so happens to be on an island and nigh inescapable. Two U.S. marshalls played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo go to the island to investigate, but stumble upon a conspiracy that may not let them leave. Eventually things become so complicated between the drugs, the hallucinations, the possibly evil staff, and the raving mad inmates, that the marshalls start to wonder what is real and what isn’t. This all builds up to a thrilling conclusion that … well that we really don’t know much about, but we hope it is some sort of ultra-violent scene where Leonardo DiCaprio gets murdered in the worst way possible. You still owe us for Titanic! King of the world this, asshole!
