The Legend of Zelda Has Continuity
As much as fans say otherwise, there actually is a Legend of Zelda storyline continuity. No really, there is. We know because Nintendo tells us so, and like idiots we believe everything Nintendo says.
If you hop on over to Gametrailers.com, you can see an awesome series of videos called The Legend of Zelda Retrospective. At one point in the series, they take us on a walkthrough through of the many convoluted twists and turns that Zelda’s plot takes. It is mostly speculation, but it has the most satisfying theories of Zelda continuity that we have seen yet. Personally, we don’t even think there is continuity between Zelda games, but now Nintendo is telling us otherwise.
The franchise overseer Eiji Aonuma confirms this in an interview with Official Nintendo Magazine. “Yes there is a master timeline but it’s a confidential document! The only people to have access to that document are myself, Mr. Miyamoto and the director of the title. We can’t share it with anyone else!” he says. So in short, there is a storyline in play here, but he refuses to share it with anyone. So we get a story … but none of us can enjoy it. Great.
For fans and speculators there is some good that comes out of this. Now you can put together the puzzle pieces in order to chronicle all your favorite Zelda games. Aonuma even has something to say about the upcoming Skyward Sword. “I have already talked to Mr. Miyamoto about this so I am comfortable in releasing this information – this title [Skyward Sword] takes place before Ocarina of Time. If I said that a certain title was ‘the first Zelda game’, then that means that we cant ever make a title that takes place before that! So for us to add titles to the series, we have to have a way of putting the titles before or after each other.”
So be on the lookout for new Zelda games in the future-past soon.
