The Many Forms of Dracula
Deafula
Believe it or not, Deafula was the first ever movie made solely in American Sign Language. The result has got to be one of the weirdest movies ever made. The story of a theology student who finds himself turning into a vampire and hunting other students for their blood doesn’t really work as a movie in general, let alone one that wanted to pioneer ASL film. Also, doesn’t being a vampire heal all parts of your body, like perhaps your hearing? Still full marks for ingenuity.
Duckula
For a children’s cartoon Duckula has one of the most sinister openings ever. The show is about a duck dracula, and yet that narrator is taking his job way too seriously. It’s like they got some sort of demented Vincent Price to narrate and the guy went hard-core. The strange thing is that Duckula doesn’t even drink blood. He’s a vegetarian whose favorite food is a broccoli sandwich. It’s the Popeye formula of trying to get children to eat their vegetables applied to a silly Dracula character who whines about the world’s misconceptions of vampires. Maybe if a certain Edward Cullen wasn’t out their ruining the genre for everyone, Duckula wouldn’t have to constantly explain himself.
Blacula
Blacula won the first ever Saturn Award for Best Horror Film; impressive for a film that was universally panned by critics. But what film about Dracula’s “soul brother” is really going to be a critical darling? The real treat in seeing Blacula is not seeing one of the coolest Blaxploitation films of all time, it’s seeing a racist Dracula. How do you come up with an idea like that?! It’s genius and racy and completely nonsensical. Perfect!
Gayracula
Yup! This is an actual movie. It got made.
Here’s a treat! The official tagline for the film. Girl your loins and prepare to succumb to an abdomen cramping laugh-fest:
Count Drac is back – and this time he’s sucking more than just necks! Count Gaylord stalks the streets of L.A. for the hunkiest victims to ever succumb to lust, as well as his enemy, the Marquis de Suede.
Old Dracula
An elder Dracula is forced to deal with the consequences when a faulty blood transfusion turns his wife black.
That is all.
