The Peter Parker Rumor Mill
In addition to the switch in directors, Sony is replacing Tobey Maguire’s sulky, emo Peter Parker with someone to be named at a future date. As someone who found Maguire’s portrayal of the iconic web-slinger heavy-handed with pussery and bitchiness, I am welcoming the change. The rumors surrounding spidey’s next characterization run the gamut from “yeah that fits” to “wtf”. But with nothing set in stone it’s anyone’s guess as to who ends up donning red and blue. Here’s a list of the actors included in the fray of speculation and our odds on whether or not they’ll be cast. If we missed someone or you think we’re wrong, bring it on in the comments!
Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner

Odds: 100:1
WTF. This has got to be Twilight fanatics projecting their wet dreams. It seems that any director casting a high school student is looking at these two to rub a little Twilight magic on the project. Both Pattinson and Lautner would bring a new target audience to the films, but certainly at the expense of hardcore fans. Fans would probably have a heart attack if either of the two were cast. Not a chance!
Zak Effron

Odds: 12:1
He’s definitely got the star power . . . among 12-year-old girls. I find it almost impossible to believe that anyone would find Troy Bolton credible as a superhero, and apart from his mousy looks Effron seems a like the furthest possible cry from the bookish nerd Peter Parker. He can pack the theatre though . . . with 12-year-old girls.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Odds: 7:1
Gordon-Levitt proved that he can do gritty in Brick and that appears to be the direction that Marvel is looking to take the franchise. He is also one of the few people other than Jesse McCartney who has worked with Webb in the past. But, JGL has yet to convince major studies that he can headline a big budget motion picture.
Michael Angarano

Odds: 5:1
Angarano has already played a superhero in Sky High and has enough dorky goofiness to be believable as a young Peter Parker if they decide to take the new movie back to high school. But Angarano’s latest forays into the Science Fiction and Fantasy genres Gentleman Broncos and The Forbidden Kingdom disastrously lame and after suffering through both I am pretty sure he throws like a girl.
Patrick Fugit

Odds: 5:1
Apart from Gordon-Levitt, Fugit boasts the strongest acting chops of the bunch, see Almost Famous, and is decidedly less cool than his rival. This could play in Fugit’s favor as could his indie credibility with films like Wristcutters and Saved!. The only thing holding Fugit back seems to be an uncanny resemblance to the film’s former star Tobey Maguire.
Jim Sturgess

Odds: 3:1
A turn as everyone’s favorite, friendly neighborhood superhero could provide Sturgess with a way to crossover to American audiences. Sturgess was charming in 21 and Across the Universe, but can hardcore fanboys buy into a British Spider-Man? Isn’t that like having an American James Bond?! A recent Twitter frenzy erupted when director Noel Clarke tweeted that Sturgess had been offered the role, but nothing has been confirmed.
P.S.: Marc Webb
He may seem like a strange choice to some considering that the most famous scene in 500DoS is a musical number that takes place just after Joseph Gordon-Levitt bangs Zooey Deschanel for the first time. However, any trepidation that fanboys may have in Webb taking over should be alleviated after a brief glance at his extensive resume: Two music videos, a Short Film, and an explosively triumphant, on-the-edge-of-your-seat thrill ride documentary on pop superstar Jesse McCartney. Sounds promising! If you’re looking to get the lowdown on all of the latest Spider-Man 4 updates check out Dan Kaufman’s latest article here

Hahahahah. LMAO. Great article. New Writer?
What about Paul Dano? dude was scary good in There Will Be Blood, and I can see him pulling off parker dorkdum and spiderman badassness.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s way to indie to be cast. Don’t be too sure that they don’t go for someone like Taylor Lautner. His parkour skills could come in handy! Plus the whole high school thing says to me that they’re trying to get the emo teen girls (save me)
This reboot is going to tank
Good to hear that Sony shows commitment to produce a decent Spiderman if the rumor of Jim Sturgess being cast as Peter Parker. It indicates that the rebooted one will emphasize more on a solid story line with a very talented actor as Spidey.
It is odd to bring up a question of nationality of the actor. A plenty of American actors played lead roles in traditional English pieces such as Gwyneth Paltrow in the Shakespeare in Love and Renée Zellweger in iconic very British movie like Bridget Jones’ Diary. You are unnecessarily parochial, my friend. Sturgess can do excellent American accent as I saw him in 21.
it should be pattinson just cuz he’s awesome
