Thursday in Action — Men in Black Gets Three, The Puppet Renaissance, and Behind the Empire
Casting in Action
Sure, there is a whole bunch of Twilight casting news out today, but if you’re anything like us you are spending more time patiently awaiting the return of gritty vampire films than standing in line with a Jacob VS Edward poster. For the real action casting news that is sure to excite the part of you that posts Batman fan fiction anonymously, be sure to check out today’s It’s All Geek to Me post for some sweet Batman and Spider-Man casting news!
MIB 3
If the MIB franchise hopes to continue in the blockbuster path of its forefathers it’s going to have improve upon the somewhat disappointing 2002 sequel MIB2. Although to be completely honest, as long as they have Will Smith in the lead role there is probably going to little if any concern about producing another hit.
The third film has thus far assembled an impressive cast including, Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin, Emma Thompson, Jemaine Clement, and Nicole Scherzinger. Rounding out this formidable troupe will be Alec Baldwin (30 Rock), Gemma Arterton (Clash of the Titans), and Sharlto Copley (District 9). Joblo reports:
“The film has Agent Jay sent back in time to 1969 where he teams up with a young Kay (Brolin) to stop an evil villain named Yaz (Clement) from destroying the world in the future. Arterton would play a secretary in the 1969 version of MIB; Baldwin would play the 1969 MIB boss; and Copley would play a fast-talking Yoda type alien.”
The actors all look well cast, so the biggest concern for MIB3 has got to be how successful or disastrous presenting the film in 3D will be.
Jim Henson Puppets
Team America took the puppet genre and made it dirty, really dirty. One viewing of the infamous TA sex scene and you will be hesitant to watch any Muppet movie again. Don’t even get me started on how vigorously Team America ruined Muppet Babies for me, and they’re not even puppets!
Emerging from the haze of the Team America puppet aftermath is a feature film to be directed by Jim Henson’s gifted puppet progeny Brian Hensen called The Happytime Murders. The film takes place in alternate reality where puppets and humans co-exist (Did someone say Last Action Hero?), and puppets are treated as second class citizens. When the puppet cast of 1980s children’s TV show The Happytime Gang starts turning up murdered, a private eye puppet with a drinking problem teams up with his former human partner to take a bite out of crime.
It’s been a while since we’ve had a puppet film to be excited about and if The Happytime Murders is as good as The Greatest Muppet Movie Ever Made looks like its going to be, we may have to gear up for a puppet renaissance.
