Action Director Supports Action

The Hollywood Reporter elucidates action director Rob Cohen’s opinions on the action genre. In short, the genre is “good.” In long,“it doesn’t get the respect it deserves.” “They have their own language and aesthetic makeup, and they contributed enormously to the development of the motion picture,” Cohen said of action films at Tuesday’s NAB show. We are behind you on that, Rob: Action movies are totally more than just random explosions and blatant danger-porn. While we’re on the subject, have you seen Crank 2 yet?

Dimension Acquires Kristy — the Script, Not the Person

According to Variety, Dimension Films has acquired Anthony Jaswinski’s script Kristy, the story of a single girl trapped on an abandoned college campus that is under attack by unknown intruders. The movie is sure to be a hit with anyone who is a fan of survival thrillers or, for that matter, anyone who has had to take the college drunk-bus home alone on a Friday night after partying a bit too hard.

Tribeca Film Festival Slims Down, Looks Better in Skirt

Variety reports that, though the Tribeca Film Festival is only showing 86 features, which is only about three fourths last year’s turnout, ticket sales are up … proportionally. Essentially, the festival is fuller because there is less festival to hold the same number of people. Still, the lack of big-name presence seems to resonate well with the fans, who appear to be enjoying the festival for its arthouse feel.

Harry Potter: More Movies Than Books

Taking the same road that Peter Jackson is going down with The Hobbit, the final Harry Potter flick, currently shooting down in London’s West End, will be split into two movies in order to get the whole story in. Dark Horizons spoke with Harry Potter producer David Heyman, who says the point where they decided to split the movie will be “exciting” to moviegoers, which roughly translates into human as, “frustrating because we will have to pay again to see the rest of the movie.”

Wanted 2: Winnie the Pooh Strikes Back

Dark Horizons revealed that the ultraviolent sequel to the assassin film Wanted will be written by none other than the mastermind behind Pooh’s Heffalump Movie, Evan Spiliotopoulos. Mark Millar, the comic’s original author and producer of the film sequel explained, “He did a great action script recently (on an unproduced movie), and that’s what got him this gig.” Piglet has never been this badass.

Arnold Agrees to Terminator As Long As He Doesn’t Have to Act

Sad that the Governator won’t be in the newest Terminator flick? Well, The L.A. Times reports that he is indeed willing to be in the movie, on one condition: that he not be required to act. Gov. Schwarzenegger made it clear that his day job leaves him no time to perform, so he will appear in the film only if the filmmakers can fill in the acting blanks with technology. It shouldn’t really matter much, though, should it? Inability to act has never hurt Schwarzenegger’s movie career in the past.

Shirtless Werewolves to Complement Sparkle Vampires

Cinemablend.com has released its first images of the upcoming Twilight sequel, New Moon. The image depicts a sexy band of shirtless male werewolves before transformation. That sound you are hearing is the simultaneous fainting of every sixteen-year-old girl on the planet.

Michael Bay Makes Trailer Mistake

Just a little while ago Michael Bay released some Transformers 2 footage on his site to promote the movie. Very quickly, however, this footage was taken down, because drooling fans noticed something huge in the trailer: Megatron! This is after Bay said that Megatron would 100 percent not be in the movie. Shame on you, Michael Bay, you lied to us. Also, Spielberg said that this trailer footage of Bay’s was the best he had ever seen (not really).

Sam Raimi Interviewed About Spiderman 4

The Sci-Fi Wire managed to snag Sam Raimi for an interview about the inevitable Spiderman 4. In it, the director discusses his talks with Kirsten Dunst for her continuing the role of Mary Jane, and the tone and direction the movie will be going in. The big question on his mind: “In a post–Watchmen/Dark Knight world, can comic-book movies survive without being dark and edgy?”

Newcomer to Write Dune Adaptation

Firstshowing.net has learned that the script writer for Peter Berg’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune is Joshua Zetumer, a relative newbie in the world of big-film screenwriting. Berg says that the script is almost done and they are preparing to turn it in, hoping to get a green light shortly. He also says that they will be doing their best to stay true to the book, blue spice eyes and all.

Ron Howard Defends Angels & Demons

Hollywood.com reports that director Ron Howard has reached out to the Catholic Church, insisting that his new movie, Angels & Demons, can be enjoyed by anyone of any religion. Angels & Demons has come under fire as attacking core Catholic beliefs, and in March the Church hinted at boycotting the movie, so Howard is trying his best to put out the fires of religious fervor before they get too big. Then again, when scandalized Christians boycotted the irreverent 1979 Monty Python film Life of Brian, silly-walk maestro John Cleese noted that the protests, which generated loads of free publicity, were the best thing that ever happened to the movie.
