Tony Jaa — Muay Thai Warrior and Buddhist Monk?
Tony Jaa, martial arts maestro, muay thai monstrosity, and now modest monk? What is going on here?!
It’s not news that after the successes of Ong-bak and the re-pairing of star and director Tony Jaa and Prachya Pinkaew in Tom yum goong that Tony Jaa may have over-stepped his bounds. Jaa requested complete creative control over Ong-bak 2, which was a disaster, both in terms of production and box-office results. The film actually had to be re-cut to be made into two movies, Ong-bak 2 and Ong-bak 3, so the production company could attempt to break even on the projects. Is Tony looking to take a break from the Thaillywood Muay Thai movie machine to recharge his battery or is he looking for a permanent pacifist approach to life? No one knows for how long, but Tony Jaa was last seen riding an elephant to a Buddhist temple in Surin, Thailand, where he proceeded to shave his head and take vows as an officially ordained Buddhist monk. This is a development that no one could have possibly predicted. Even Jaa’s mother is hoping that he will leave his monkish ways behind in the next couple years and start a family.
Does this mean that the Ong-bak franchise will make the transition from Muay Thai to meditation? It would probably be better than Ong-bak 2.

I love Tony Jaa but the second and third Ong Bak were terrible. I didn’t know they were supposed to be one movie but that makes sense. Whether he comes back to the movie business or not is totally up to him. If he thinks movie making isn’t for him and he finds himself better off as a monk, I wouldn’t hold it against him. He’s still a great fighter who’s left his mark.
