Wednesday in Action — The Killer 3D, Deathly Hallows SFX and Killing Mario
The Wicker Tree
The Wicker Man (1973) remains one of the classic, creepy, culty films that is guaranteed to disturb your sleep for weeks to come. That ending still sends chills down my spine. The Wicker Man (2006) remains of the creepiest, weirdest, silliest films that Nicolas Cage has ever been in, and that is really saying something. In an attempt to redeem his beloved film, director Robin Hardy has set out to reimagine the concept of the film on his own terms (He’s even got Christopher Lee to return!). This film will serve as neither a sequel nor a remake, but a companion piece. That seems like another word for “cash cow”.
The Killer 3D
John Woo’s The Killer is one of the defining films of the hardcore action that emerged from the Cinema of Hong Kong in the 80s and early 90s. The film showcased the frenetic directing style of Woo as well as the icy, coolness of a young Chow Yun-Fat. The Killer is the tale of a near-retired assassin who agrees to one last hit in hopes of earning enough cash to restore vision to a singer he accidentally blinded. The remake, currently slated to be filmed in 3D will be directed by John H. Lee and will see Jung Woo-Sung (The Good, The Bad, and The Weird) take up the role formerly played by Fat.
The Deathly Hallows SFX
The SFX behind the Harry Potter films often gets drowned out by the fascinating/magical story, and the action scenes that are typically on par with any Michael Bay film. No longer! Visual Effects Supervisor Nicolas Aithadi is nominated for an Oscar for his work on the Deathly Hallows: Part 1. Aithadi runs down how he accomplished one of the coolest visual effects scenes in the film. Gotta love those Daniel Radcliffe eyebrows.
Killing Mario
You can only keep you favorite protagonist plumber alive by knowing all of the ways in which he could possibly perish. Study hard, study long, and do you best to eat that magic mushroom.
