Wednesday in Action — Wolverine 2, Gwen Stacy, The Tempest, and Berkserk
Wolverine 2
In what is potentially the most wonderful superhero news since Christopher Nolan was announced as the director of Batman Begins, it was announced today that Darren Aronofsky is currently in negotiations to direct Wolverine 2. Yes, he of ridiculously brooding and cool films like Black Swan, The Wrestler, The Fountain, Requiem for a Dream and Pi could be the next guy to tackle everyone’s favorite cigar-smoking, face-slashing hero.
While I would normally think of this news as coming straight out of left field, Aronofsky was rumored to be attached to both the Batman and Superman reboots. As we know, Nolan was assigned to Batman, and as of earlier this week Zack Snyder has signed up for Man of Steel. So perhaps Aronofsky’s link to the upcoming sequel isn’t that surprising. Aronofsky did enjoy a friendship with Jackman when the two worked on The Fountain together, so perhaps they have been itching to work with each other ever since. Aronofsky hasn’t tred anywhere near the superhero genre but perhaps the auteur will come up with something that can force Chistopher Nolan to up his game.

Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy
Well this is embarrassing! Chalk it up to making loose associations tied to an actress who just happened to have the same color hair as a star in the movie she is about to star in, but Emma Stone will not be playing Mary Jane Watson. Ms. Stone, who is actually a natural blond, will be taking on the role of the primary love interest in the upcoming Spider-Man reboot, Gwen Stacy. Am I the only one experiencing an uncanny wave of déja vu? This reminds me way too much of when Kirsten Dunst, a natural blond took the part of Mary Jane, and Bryce Dallas Howard, a natural redhead, snatched up the role of Gwen Stacy in the franchises previous incarnation. AARGH!
The Tempest
Not as action-based as I’d like but I can’t help mentioning Julie Taymor’s (Across the Universe, Frida, Titus ) latest film The Tempest. The staggering cast led by Russell Brand, Alfred Molina, Helen Mirren, Chris Cooper, Alan Cumming, Djimon Hounsou, and David Strathairn looks like it will probably play second fiddle to the insane visuals Taymor is using to depict the bard’s final work.
Berserk
There is no disputing that Berserk is one of the best manga ever. The tale of Guts, an orphaned mercenary warrior, and Griffith, the leader of a mercenary band called the Band of the Hawk, is at once, horrifying, beautiful, violent, and sexy. The argument about the series pertains more to the anime. The anime, which is also one of the best ever, ended after a brief 26 episode run leaving many fans feeling alienated, betrayed, psychotic, and homicidal. Why would they end something so amazing!? The abrupt ending to the series, however, is no more! Rejoice Berserk fans, your salvation is upon you.
