Where’s the Action This Weekend — Nov. 6th – 8th
Need a good movie to watch this weekend? No need to worry. We got you actionistas covered! There are three big hits that you may want to see this weekend. Two of them are PG-13, experimental horrors and the last is a good old fashioned R rated action comedy. Give ‘em a look and see which ones you’ll be munching popcorn to this weekend.
The Fourth Kind
Studio: Universal Pictures
Director: Olatunde Osunsanmi
Screenwriter: Olatunde Osunsanmi
Starring: Milla Jovovich, Elias Koteas, Will Patton
Genre: Thriller
Rating: PG-13
The Fourth Kind is another movie that is riding on the wave of Blair Witch style popularity that has come back in force since the release of Paranormal Activity. The Fourth Kind puts Milla Jovovich in the shoes of Dr. Abigail Emily Tyler, a shrink who travels to Alaska and find aliens! Holy crap aliens guys! Look they are real! Extraterrestrials! Scary! BOO!
Seriously though, according to reviews, this movie spends little time developing plot and more time developing its own credibility. There are many scenes in the movie that parallel “real” footage of Dr. Tyler with footage of Jovovich, though this doesn’t do much to forward the movie’s credibility. As much as the movie tries to pass this off as “real” we all know that the levitating mental patient is actually just a wire trick. Filled with overacting and cheap mock documentary footage, The Fourth Kind, apparently, just doesn’t seem to get across a feeling of horror. [Variety]
The Box
Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures
Director: Richard Kelly
Screenwriter: Richard Kelly
Starring: Cameron Diaz, James Marsden, Frank Langella
Genre: Thriller
Rating: PG-13
The Box is a movie based on an old Twilight Zone episode based on the short story Button Button by Richard Matheson. The premise is simple. Let’s say that you are encountering a bit of financial duress. A large sum of money would be quite useful right about now. Luckily enough, a man with a scarred face shows up to your door with a box. Inside the box, is another box! Inside this box is a button that, if pushed, will cause someone, somewhere in the world, who you don’t know, to die. Also, you will get a payment of… one million dollars *dramatic music Dr. Evil pinky*.
The Box was a simple premise that made for a very creepy Twilight Zone episode, but the movie seems to take it one step too far. Originally, this story was all about personal moral dilemmas, but in this adaptation the fate of the world appears to be at stake. Tons of other references to Twilight Zone episodes are thrown in, and the movie is so retro you tend to forget the actual purpose of the movie in the first place. Wait … what was the purpose of the movie in the first place? Oh well. At least there are explosions and chases and a box. It’s a cool looking box! Either way, The Box tends to over-step its boundaries and that is its fatal flaw. [Hollywood and Fine]
The Men Who Stare at Goats
Studio: Overture Films
Director: Grant Heslov
Screenwriter: Peter Straughan
Starring: George Clooney, Jeff Bridges, Ewan McGregor, Kevin Spacey, Rebecca Mader, Terry Serpico
Genre: Action/Comedy
Rating: R
The Men Who Stare at Goats is all about men, who stare at goats. Good title! Specifically, this movie is about the governments “real” psychic spy program, in which they trained a select group of soldiers in the paranormal arts to form an elite fighting unit. Sadly, some of these super-human abilities were greatly exaggerated. Reporter Bob Wilton (Ewan McGregor) wants to get the real scoop, and in doing so is dragged into a special mission taken on by Lyn Cassidy (George Clooney) to find the former leader of the psychic spy program.
According to reviews, The Men Who Stare at Goats is just, phenomenal. It is not too long, not too short, and crams tons of action and laughs into one simple package. We would also like to note that while the supposed “horrors” all have a PG-13 rating, The Men Who Stare at Goats doesn’t fuck around. It’s R rating is there because of the drug references, sex references, and plain old adult humor. If you want to see not-so-psychic assassins fight against terrorists, then The Men Who Stare at Goats is your movie. [Variety]
