Now playing: Doug Liman Blog: Day 2 in Haiti, Scouting Locations and The Cutest, Tone-Deaf Girl In All of Port au Prince
Writing to you from Yale Law School where I am attending the Liman Colloquium named after and in honor of my father. This is the 13th colloquium. This year’s topic is incarceration so this ties in nicely to the research we are doing for Attica. I will be screening Fair Game for the attendees at the conclusion of the event tomorrow, so my involvement has changed this year from that of financial supporter to active participant.
We’ve finished cutting my vlogs from Haiti and I’ll be putting the rest of them up soon. In this video, day two, we went scouting for locations for We Are The World. We ended up shooting in 4 different locations one of which is featured in this piece. The most eerie thing about Haiti was knowing there were people still buried in most of the buildings we saw and visited. Unfortunately, you didn’t always need your imagination. Almost all of the resources available were being spent on helping the living, which I agree with.
David Belle, the man driving the car and speaking to me in front of the cathedral was a producer and co-director for We Are The World. There was a huge amount for us to capture in a small period of time so I was grateful to be surrounded by a smart, artistic and resourceful team.
As I mentioned in my other Haiti blogs if you are interested in giving money to Sean Penn’s Jenkins-Penn Haitian Relief Organization, and helping the survivors of the earthquake go to www.jphro.org.

Talk to you soon, Ninjas.

Tragic stuff man, it was heartbreaking what happened to the choir. Looking forward to seeing a trailer for fair game.
Hello,
Are you the Doug Liman who directed The Bourne Identity? If so, I have a question for you. I am currently in a film analysis class, and we are analyzing a scene in the Bourne Identity–it’s scene 8, where Jason meets Marie for the first time.
My question is, what kind of lens did you use?
Thank you, and have a great day!
Naod Yelema
@Noad – Are you referring to scene in embassy where he sees her or outside by car — assuming outside by car, I was mostly using 50 millimeter lenses at that stage of my filming career (during the course of Bourne, I moved from the 25mm lens with which I filmed all of Swingers, all the way to 150mm lenses). Basically I couldn’t afford an AC or the lights to keep a long lens in focus with my earlier films, during the course of filming Bourne, I discovered longer and longer lenses.
That scene landed in the middle of shooting – which is when I was most comfortable with the 50mm. Since they are across the car from each other, I may have also gone up to a 75mm, I honestly cant remember.
Vfx people can look at a shot and tell you what the lens was — have no idea how they do it. Hope this was helpful
@ Ars3nal – The whole thing was heartbreaking and yet amazing the way people were coming together to help and I can’t wait to show you the trailer for Fair Game!
Hello Doug,
Thanks for responding to Naod. I was actually working with him in the Writing Studio when this question came up. He said, “I have no idea what kind of lens he used, but we are supposed to find out.” So, I said, “Well, let’s ask him!” We weren’t sure if you would respond but figured it was worth a shot.
Thanks for helping out!
